This day is quite special in many Eastern cultures. It's a National Holiday in many countries, just to give a few examples. The full moon around this day is said to appear to be rounder, bigger and brighter. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIm_83nb7vAaUeTz0ziwe_dXpd-xaoWs52roJfsXXYiwLv0ED8CTdEn02wNj0dNf5jed5-YPSGfOtBbgXOFWZLmNeWRRD5wKICzxbShiu1AMWm5hN2J6ohIwLhAlVXCvVKMFL6xBDYSlE/s1600/WS_Fall+Equinox.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" px="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiIm_83nb7vAaUeTz0ziwe_dXpd-xaoWs52roJfsXXYiwLv0ED8CTdEn02wNj0dNf5jed5-YPSGfOtBbgXOFWZLmNeWRRD5wKICzxbShiu1AMWm5hN2J6ohIwLhAlVXCvVKMFL6xBDYSlE/s320/WS_Fall+Equinox.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The days have become shorter and shorter, and the sun isn't rising as high in the sky as it used to, but it gives great lighting effects to the scenery. Sun rises and sun sets are going to beautiful as they shine through a deeper angle and add character to the autumn air. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Just a few days ago, Mount Shasta turned all white for the first time since spring. It wasn't the first snow fall, but it was the first snow that stayed for more than a day. This reminds us of the heavenly White Shasta that will show up in a few months. Winter in Shasta is an experience you can't miss if you love Mount Shasta. The snow, wood stove, crisp air and the white mountain are just a few highlights, and there's many more. </div>Stoney Brook Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17569065176795886574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8760039763690241075.post-44439728179851578492010-08-20T21:04:00.000-07:002010-08-20T21:04:30.347-07:00Burney Falls *August 2010The trails of McArthur-Burney Falls have been going through some major repair work for months now. According to their Visitor's Guide handed out at the park entrance, the repair project may extend into next year. This construction should improve the trail conditions to a smoother and safer pathway to the falls. But despite the construction, it's still worth the visit (and $8 State Park fee) because you can still go down to the falls through a detour. <br />

This water fall changes its shape dramatically throughout the season. In the spring, water gushes through two outlets, and you can't go near it without getting wet. In the summer, it turns into a single flow with much less water. <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Some people call it the "Fairy Falls" as it does feel a bit like a different world where fairies could live in. In the spring, the abundant water literally washes away any excess baggage on your shoulders. In the summer, the single stream of water brings you back to focus. </div>Stoney Brook Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17569065176795886574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8760039763690241075.post-79545030184967204822010-08-11T16:08:00.000-07:002010-08-11T16:08:57.810-07:00Mossbrea FallsOne of the most popular water falls visited in Mount Shasta is the Mossbrea Falls. It's famous for the curtain-like water fall that elegantly flows off the slopes next to the rail road. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuLMkR-Ai9HAV9d_kt3KPX3s9e44PbbKBrxL0xxK7LQXoUz70bJtr57sPbfrOdJwZ8sFyBN8fpUgfmXFuFcrBv8qTfE6Yn7Hv3h6MgX4iJtkH_I1ZkdfanywsqFWg6sueZe5l19ja4Sts/s1600/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+Railroad.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" mx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiuLMkR-Ai9HAV9d_kt3KPX3s9e44PbbKBrxL0xxK7LQXoUz70bJtr57sPbfrOdJwZ8sFyBN8fpUgfmXFuFcrBv8qTfE6Yn7Hv3h6MgX4iJtkH_I1ZkdfanywsqFWg6sueZe5l19ja4Sts/s200/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+Railroad.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifPMs_x5Xu58DMlDo80pPsYpKX1Kcv6X39nShx-v7czP4ypl-m9DN8yc0Fzmj_QVRKrypCErrHBq11oaUZ-q3e1hFbYFAOp5yiGn9ONXk47H11mgjixjj5H3-zDgMhlk_lpyPMnOTC3to/s1600/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+Trail.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" mx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifPMs_x5Xu58DMlDo80pPsYpKX1Kcv6X39nShx-v7czP4ypl-m9DN8yc0Fzmj_QVRKrypCErrHBq11oaUZ-q3e1hFbYFAOp5yiGn9ONXk47H11mgjixjj5H3-zDgMhlk_lpyPMnOTC3to/s200/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+Trail.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The road to the falls is a bumpy trail. It's about a half an hour hike on the rocks laid along the train tracks where scenes from the movie "Stand By Me" were filmed. Watch out for the train that comes multiple times a day. They're not super fast, but they don't stop for you. Once you hear the train (yes, you can hear them), be sure to step away from the tracks right away. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br />
</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHMhPbHYdqvhhntRRd0VUt8AytHKbbpsO0AMvS40yvuZk2ImsMYhcjGO2_tI3tvunJtOBdbDhhdKgpe1Hcgg5uelLRklmr-HgeViJrIOUBbG9O68MpNX7Jci0mR6wMRyFi5chm7i5Y9dk/s1600/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" mx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjHMhPbHYdqvhhntRRd0VUt8AytHKbbpsO0AMvS40yvuZk2ImsMYhcjGO2_tI3tvunJtOBdbDhhdKgpe1Hcgg5uelLRklmr-HgeViJrIOUBbG9O68MpNX7Jci0mR6wMRyFi5chm7i5Y9dk/s320/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+1.jpg" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br />
</div>The rail road tracks don't have much shade, so make sure to wear enough sun screen and clothes. Once you walk down the path that leads to the water falls, you'll notice the temperature drop right away. The breeze from the water is very refreshing after the 30 minute hike. This water fall is medium height, but very wide because the entire face of the slope is covered in water. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZu9kPAjp9DsBSRR_6qGjc00317v4fDS77WITAu4TheyaxQ14D2YAb8VXlexQvE8-H8ai0vr5h2rV5b3D5BteZtkJUNJygh8zhy0pAD3Ms4yUPUYS7M2ShuQUeScRNAl_o7f7HyrJu3DE/s1600/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" mx="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjZu9kPAjp9DsBSRR_6qGjc00317v4fDS77WITAu4TheyaxQ14D2YAb8VXlexQvE8-H8ai0vr5h2rV5b3D5BteZtkJUNJygh8zhy0pAD3Ms4yUPUYS7M2ShuQUeScRNAl_o7f7HyrJu3DE/s320/WS_Mossbrea+Falls+2.jpg" /></a></div><br />
People kayak down this river during the spring when the water level is high. In the summer, the stream slows down and becomes shallow enough to get your feet wet. The sprinkles carried by the breeze makes it seems as if you're taking a big natural shower in the woods. Choose a rock around the falls, and sit on it for a while to enjoy this natural beauty. The Mossbrea Falls is accessible throughout the year.Stoney Brook Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17569065176795886574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8760039763690241075.post-78755325068533693952010-08-10T16:37:00.000-07:002010-08-10T16:37:39.701-07:00Twin PeaksMount Shasta consists of two peaks, the lower one being called "Shastina." The unsymmetrical twin peak feature allows Mount Shasta to look different from all sides. Mount Shasta is said to represent both the female and male energies that exist in all beings including humans. <br />

Interestingly, Shastina sits on the northern slope of Mount Shasta, but is not the colder side. In the summer, you will notice the snow melts quicker on Shastina than on Shasta, which sits on the south side. McCloud is located in the southern region of this area, and locals consider it the cold and snowy town. Indeed we get heavy snow fall compared to the northern towns, but we also enjoy the quiet atmosphere with very few traffic in town. <br />

We've seen quiet and reserved people become hyper, or active people become even more active and vice versa. Children seem to react to this energy the fastest. But eventually, the energy of Mount Shasta flows through you, and words are lost. <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">This experience is unique to everyone, but people seem to be able to tap into their deep conscious with the help of this vortex energy, and words just become limitations to this wonderful experience. McCloud is a quiet town with very few traffic and noise. Along with the deep Mother Nature protected inside the Shasta-Trinity National Forest, it continues to be one of the popular places for retreats and workshops. </div>Stoney Brook Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17569065176795886574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8760039763690241075.post-86269109071647207362010-08-08T13:51:00.000-07:002010-08-08T18:53:46.828-07:00Some Call It Weed<div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;">The heat wave has passed, and the nice afternoon breeze brings a hint of autumn here in Mount Shasta. You'll notice some flowers have started to wilt, and water falls have shrunk, but it's also a perfect time of the year for hiking and other outdoor activities. Before the blooming season is over, be sure to check out the wild flowers and deep green foliage before they change colors. </div><div style="border-bottom: medium none; border-left: medium none; border-right: medium none; border-top: medium none;"><br />

This 1-hour trail is a little hard to climb. It's very steep in some areas and it's also very rocky. The elevation is relatively high, so don't rush. Take your time and drink lots of water. Don't forget to wear a hat, and preferably long sleeve clothes. Here's a well-known hiker's etiquette to keep in mind when stepping into this wild life area. <br />
<br />
<strong>Take nothing but pictures, and leave nothing but foot prints ON THE TRAILS.</strong> <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwIGP0CX7Mvg6IA-kWRRYsD_WRSECHUA9un1WfjPALij81sW2uUUjiTA81aHTFiF6GPx1H4hRKp7_jUqxBdTQpieEEJ-yoHySMUHNlS-tHo3I5OSM41uPoX-QbjmePRK6Yskhyphenhyphenb4XQ3Iw/s1600/WS_Beavertail-Grass.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" hw="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgwIGP0CX7Mvg6IA-kWRRYsD_WRSECHUA9un1WfjPALij81sW2uUUjiTA81aHTFiF6GPx1H4hRKp7_jUqxBdTQpieEEJ-yoHySMUHNlS-tHo3I5OSM41uPoX-QbjmePRK6Yskhyphenhyphenb4XQ3Iw/s200/WS_Beavertail-Grass.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="color: #666666;">Beavertail Grass (<em>Calochortus coeruleus</em>)</span></div><br />
Alpine wild flowers have a very short growing season, and it takes a tremendous amount of energy to grow in the rocky, dry mountains. They're not like dandelions that can grow on any disturbed soil, and one step can easily destroy years worth of growth. A few minutes of exploring mindless curiosity can create a new trail that may invite others to wander in. <br />
<br />

Trails are not made by rangers trimming out the path each year (they do clear out dead trees and other hazards). Plants simply cannot grow on heavily compacted soil where dozens of people walk on every day. The sign that says, "STAY ON TRAIL" is not only to keep you from getting lost, but it's also to protect the precious wild life we want to continue to enjoy for many generations. <br />

</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Middle Falls (McCloud Falls) in the summer looks like this - lush green foliage and lots of water. It's a popular location for those who like to sit quietly and feel the breeze. It's also perfect for a morning hike, since mornings tend to have less traffic and thus more space to yourself. </div>Stoney Brook Innhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17569065176795886574noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8760039763690241075.post-55766271136594891922010-07-06T21:13:00.000-07:002010-07-22T21:01:08.925-07:00Burney FallsLocated in between Shasta and Lassen National Forests, Burney Falls is one of the most visited water falls in California. It's located about 40 miles away from McCloud, inside the McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park off highway 89. Burney Falls is also known for its year-round water flow uncommon for many mountain water falls. <br />

This 129 feet fall gives off a fresh breeze during the hot summer days. The mist creates a rainbow that can usually be seen between late mornings to early afternoons when the sun angle is just right. <br />

After the heavy snow and rain fall last winter, the water level this summer is probably the highest in the past 3, 4 years. It's worth the visit to feel the vibration of water dropping from over 100 feet high.<br />

There's a hiking trail that circles around the water fall. It's a nice and easy hike inside the State Park. It's been pretty cool up until a few weeks ago, so you might be able to catch a glimpse of some wildflowers that just started to show up. <br />
